When Mitch was eight years old his mum brought him his first skateboard. The skateboard became his closest and most loved possession, and it basically went everywhere with him. As a teenager Mitch discovered snowboarding. This new discovery and adventurous sport sparked a passion in him. Snowboarding grew to become a sport he loved so he trained hard and made it his mission to become good at it.
Mitch didn’t come from a wealthy family but nevertheless it did not stop him from taking the initiative to train hard and upskill himself to become a professional athlete in this sport. He knew that to continue thriving and competing as a snowboarder, getting sponsors was his only way to move forward. Snowboarding equipment is expensive so to help cover his costs Mitch made it his goal to get sponsors. With time and effort Mitch eventually got sponsored by some of the biggest companies in the industry including Quicksilver, Rip Curl, and Billabong.
When his children were born Mitch stopped going overseas to snowboard. He wanted to spend time with his three children and as a way of keeping active and engaged within the community he started skateboarding again, every day. When the time was right Mitch taught his own children how to skate. He found a new passion in teaching not only his children, but he also wanted to teach other children the art of skateboarding.
Mitch began to train and invite community kids to skateboard events he was running so that participants could showcase the tricks and skills they had been taught.
There are many benefits of skateboarding- fitness, balance, balance in motion and the physical, mental, and social aspects that are beneficial in so many ways. The social benefit of having group activities also encourages a sense of community. It is a place where kids come together to build friendships. Mitch also coaches kids with special needs creating opportunities for everyone to be made inclusive and be involved. Boys, girls, a team player or not, skateboarding is a great sport for anyone.
After spending several years living in Mansfield/Mt Buller Mitch moved back to the Mornington Peninsula. It was at this time that he started his own skateboard coaching business ‘Progression Skate Sessions’.
Mitch now coaches skateboarding 7 days a week and has many eager and enthusiastic participants of all ages who get together outdoors to enjoy the freedom of skateboarding. When he is not teaching and training out in the community, Mitch spends his evenings building skate ramps for the children he coaches and for any other local skateboarder who needs a skate ramp.
Mitch has recently taken up snowboarding again. When he is not coaching or competing at skate events with his children, he sneaks off to the mountains to reignite and enjoy his passion for snowboarding.
Mitch is looking forward to being in the studio at RppFm, 98.7 to be made inclusive on ‘The Daily Mirror’ with Cathy and is thrilled to have his daughter Indy join in for a chat. Indy also an enthusiastic and talented skateboarder is ‘sponsored’ by local Mornington Peninsula business, Trigger Brothers. Mitch and Indy are excited to share what they have planned for ‘Progression Skate Sessions’.
Mitch says “I love spending my days teaching kids how to fall in love with skateboarding. My mission is to focus my attention on starting a series of competitive skateboarding events on the Mornington Peninsula. I want people within the wider community to get involved and support activities that encourage kids to get outdoors”.
Skating in local skate parks and loving the freedom to be out in mother nature is what Mitch and his kids enjoys.
‘Progression Skate Sessions’ has the momentum and creative buzz that is getting attention. Skateboarding is being enjoyed by all those involved.
The Mornington Peninsula deserves to have exciting, and fun activities to look forward to. Mitch has a plan to organise skateboarding and snowboarding events in the future for his participants. His vision is to continue growing a community of local skateboarders who flourish and go from strength to strength.
