Tusi: A Voice of hope for all to embrace
Tusi is a remarkable Polynesian Australian singer, counsellor, and mental health advocate based in the southeastern suburbs of Melbourne. At just 32 years old, his life story is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of self-belief. Through his artistry and advocacy work, Tusi seeks to inspire others to overcome adversity, challenge societal stereotypes, and embrace their true selves.
Overcoming Adversity from Birth
Born with Crouzon syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the shape of the skull and can lead to hearing and vision loss, Tusi's journey has been anything but ordinary. Doctors did not expect him to survive infancy, but his strength and resilience defied the odds. Between the ages of five and eight, Tusi underwent multiple surgeries to correct his condition, missing crucial years of schooling as a result. His last operation in 2011, at age 18, required a lengthy recovery over eight months, but he emerged stronger and more determined than ever.
Growing up, his family life was filled with challenges. The uncertainty of family dynamics, combined with being unable to communicate outside the home, meant that Tusi learned early on to be resilient and adaptable. Despite these hardships, he discovered happiness in small moments and developed a deep sense of inner strength. His childhood memories include performing The Beatles' classic Let It Be in second grade — a moment that sparked his love for music. Although his parents sang around the house, they never heard him sing publicly until his early twenties.

A Love for Music Without Limits
Tusi never received formal music lessons but was always drawn to music in all its forms. He would often listen to a wide range of genres—from the classic tunes of the 1950s and 1960s to contemporary hits—finding comfort and inspiration in the diversity of sound. His listening habits helped shape his eclectic musical style, which now blends rap, hip-hop, pop, dance, funk, and roots music.
Despite attending a school for the blind during middle primary, Tusi felt that it was holding him back and stifling his growth. He transitioned to mainstream schooling, where he thrived academically and socially. His resilience was tested again in secondary school when a teacher’s aide discouraged him, saying, “School’s not for you,” urging him to drop out. But Tusi’s determination persisted, and he continued to push forward.
Educational Achievements and Musical Breakthroughs
Tusi’s passion for music led him to pursue a certificate in music at TAFE, followed by a bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Music. During his studies, he embraced a wide variety of genres, refusing to limit himself creatively. His dedication was recognized when he was awarded an $8,000 bursary from Guide Dogs Australia, which provided significant support toward his studies and future ambitions.
In 2019, Tusi had a standout moment when he performed the national anthem for an audience of 10,000 at a graduation ceremony at Kangan Institute. He also explored improv comedy to develop his stage presence and confidence, further expanding his skills as a performer.
A New Chapter in Counselling and Advocacy
In 2023, driven by his desire to help others and inspired by a friend’s comment about his natural empathy, Tusi enrolled in a counselling degree at the University of Divinity. People are often drawn to him as a source of comfort during difficult times, thanks to his genuine ability to make others feel heard, valued, and supported. His empathy and presence are qualities that cannot be taught—they are innate.
That same year, Tusi began mentoring through ‘Wild at Heart’ Community Arts, a vibrant organization supporting artists with visible and invisible disabilities, mental health challenges, neurodiversity, and gender diversity. Participants learn new skills, record and release music, and perform as equals in the industry. Through this role, Tusi gained the confidence to lead performances on the streets, supporting others on stage and redefining his role from mentee to mentor.
Music as a Force for Change
Tusi’s song ‘Can’t Break Me,’ released in 2021, encapsulates his unwavering spirit and determination. Its empowering message resonates deeply with those facing their own struggles. His debut album, Scatterbrain, released in 2025, is a vibrant collection of songs that blend genres and reflect his diverse musical influences. It’s a testament to his refusal to be boxed in or limited by societal expectations.
Over the past year, Tusi has shared his story and music on RPPFM, performing heartfelt songs and inspiring countless listeners. His journey—from overcoming physical and emotional hardships to becoming a voice for mental health and social change—continues to inspire many.
Looking Toward the Future
Tusi remains committed to exceeding the limitations placed upon him, both personally and professionally. His craft is a reflection of his resilience and self-belief, and he uses his platform to challenge societal norms and advocate for greater acceptance and understanding.
With his quiet determination and humility, Tusi exemplifies what it means to turn adversity into strength. His story is not only about overcoming obstacles but also about empowering others to find their voice and embrace their unique journey. This is just the beginning for this inspiring, high-spirited, and humble individual, whose impact is sure to grow in the years to come.
