Topic- "A Celebration of Roots, Unity, and Artistic Spirit"

Roots in Sicily and Beyond
Josephine’s journey begins with a deep connection to Sicily, specifically the Aeolian Islands of Salina and Lipari. Growing up in Melbourne, her identity was intertwined with the stories, traditions, and flavours of her Sicilian heritage. Even across thousands of kilometres, Italy was always a part of her life — expressed through food, family traditions, and the little moments that made her feel at home.
A Young Dreamer’s Beginning
In 2021, while still in Year 11, Josephine launched Bedda Vita — a name that means “Beautiful Life” in Sicilian dialect. It all started with handmade beaded necklaces, driven by youthful creativity and excitement rather than a grand business plan. The name “Bedda” was inspired by her Nonno, who affectionately called her “Bedda,” a term meaning “Bella” or “Beautiful” in Sicilian.
Growing Beyond Jewellery
What began as a small jewellery endeavour gradually expanded into clothing, accessories, and events. Josephine designed pieces inspired by Sicily, Mediterranean life, and her personal experiences, aiming to capture the essence of her homeland without falling into stereotypes. Instead, she wanted Bedda Vita to embody the Italy she knew — filled with family, summer days, islands, humour, food, vibrant colours, nostalgia, and community.
Over the years, collections sold out across Australia, and her products found their way into Italian festivals and community events in Melbourne. But the true magic wasn’t just in the sales — it was in the connections she built along the way.

Creating Community Through Cultura
One of Bedda Vita’s most meaningful initiatives was Cultura — a platform dedicated to sharing the stories of Italian Australians. This community-focused space celebrated creators, artists, business owners, and those committed to preserving their culture. The first Cultura event brought together diverse individuals in a lively gathering of food, music, dancing, conversations, and activities. Most memorable was witnessing friendships blossom among people who might never have crossed paths otherwise.
That night revealed the true power of Bedda Vita: it wasn’t just a brand, but a space for connection and belonging.

Beyond Fashion: A Life of People
Outside of Bedda Vita, Josephine’s life reflects her passion for community and understanding. She works at a supported-employment café at Mornington Library, supporting individuals with disabilities to develop skills, confidence, and meaningful employment. She also holds a Bachelor of Psychology, giving her insight into human behaviour and the importance of purpose and social connection.
Despite the seemingly diverse roles — psychology, hospitality, disability support, and fashion — she sees a common thread: people. Her mission is to create things that evoke feelings — confidence, nostalgia, excitement, belonging, or simply the feeling of being part of something special.
A Deeper Connection to Sicily
Traveling back to Sicily has further shaped Josephine’s perspective on identity. Spending time in Lipari and Salina, surrounded by family, made her realize that her stories and roots weren’t just distant memories but integral parts of her story. These places transformed her understanding of her heritage from stories on a map to lived experience.
Her connection to Sicily has deepened her inspiration for Bedda Vita, reinforcing her belief that growing up between worlds — Australian and Sicilian — is a gift. She no longer feels the need to choose between her identities; instead, she embraces both, carrying their richness with her.
Looking Ahead: Dreams and Purpose
Josephine sees herself as only at the beginning of her journey. Bedda Vita continues to evolve with new ideas for events, travel, content, and community-building. Her path is one of learning, trying, making mistakes, and growing.
For her, success isn’t a destination but a reflection of the meaningful relationships, opportunities, and memories she’s created since starting in Year 11. When she looks at herself in The Daily Mirror, she sees someone still becoming, shaped by her family, her heritage, and her experiences.
A Life Well-Lived
Most importantly, Josephine feels grateful. She’s proud of what she’s built so far, but she’s also excited for what’s next. To her, a beautiful life isn’t about perfection but about connection, purpose, family, culture, and creating something she truly cares about.
Bedda Vita: More Than a Brand
At its core, Bedda Vita is a celebration of life, culture, community, and identity — a reflection of Josephine’s journey as a young woman who refuses to be defined by borders or stereotypes. It’s a story of growth, belonging, and the endless possibilities that come from staying true to oneself.
