The live music scene on the Mornington Peninsula faced a unique set of challenges and opportunities, particularly in the wake of the ongoing effects of COVID-19. As live performances struggled to take hold in the aftermath of the pandemic, both seasoned musicians and newcomers experienced significant difficulties in securing regular work and establishing connections with local venues, bookers and promoters. This situation highlighted a critical gap: the need for a cohesive platform that could effectively promote gigs and foster collaboration among artists.
Recognizing these challenges, Steve and Helen Myles, Peninsula Beer Garden, Mornington Peninsula Shire and the local community have made strides to revitalize and enhance its live music landscape. Initiatives aimed at building networking platforms and peninsula wide resources are key to connecting artists, venues, and audiences, creating a vibrant ecosystem that supports the local music economy. These platforms facilitate communication and collaboration, allowing musicians to share resources, experiences, and opportunities with one another.
Moreover, there is a growing focus on providing the guidance and training necessary for artists to successfully launch and maintain a schedule of consistently booked gigs.
As the community comes together to address these challenges, the resurgence of live music on the Mornington Peninsula not only enriches the cultural fabric of the area but also contributes to its economic vitality. By empowering musicians and enhancing the overall music scene, the Peninsula is laying the groundwork for a thriving live music environment that benefits artists, venues, and audiences alike. The determination to support and cultivate local talent will undoubtedly breathe new life into the region's music industry and ensure its longevity for years to come.
PBG has made significant strides in enhancing the live music scene on the Mornington Peninsula by expanding their premium free live music every weekend and their ticketed shows to now spotlight the original material from local talent. Through the Songwriters Series, they are empowering beloved local performers to elevate their gigs into ticketed events, allowing them to showcase their original compositions rather than the cover songs that often dominate their regular performances. This initiative not only celebrates the unique voices of these artists—like Paul Dillon, The Calmer Miles, Saoirse, Mietta, Geoff Carruthers, —but also provides them with an invaluable platform to gain recognition and connect with audiences on a deeper level.
PBG’s music and entertainment program now feature an impressive lineup of local, original, and tribute artists, ensuring a diverse and vibrant selection of performances for music lovers. Each weekend, four artists or bands grace the stage, and throughout the year, there are monthly Discovery Series performances for four months, followed by the Songwriters Series. Additionally, the roster includes exciting tribute shows such as Totally Stonez, Fleetwood Max, Inxsive, Beatlz, and Sos – the Australian ABBA show, which adds a layer of entertainment that connects audiences to well-known favourites. For those people looking for something more, PGB also has stand-up comedy and trivia nights for an extra element of fun and laughter.

The program’s comprehensive approach ensures that participants not only develop their musical talents but also gain essential business acumen critical for a successful career in music.
As the participants engage in hands-on learning experiences, they will be responsible for organizing and executing a series of events hosted at the stylish Velvet Lounge. These performances will serve as a real-world laboratory where they can apply what they've learned about promoting their music, coordinating logistics, and creating memorable experiences for their audiences.
This culminates in a finale show that will highlight the original music created by the participants, allowing them to showcase their unique artistry while demonstrating the skills they've honed throughout the program.
