It’s not every day that someone you know hands you the book they wrote and asks you to review it. I was a client of debut author Cathy Vescio-Dibella’s hair salon until I moved out of area and I’m so amazed that she has taken 33 years of stories and experiences and turned them into a book. If you’ve ever poured your heart out while sitting in a salon chair, if you’ve ever griped and whinged to the person cutting your hair, if you’ve ever wondered who else is doing the same, this book is for you. Get ready for the good, the bad, the ugly and the weird of people from all walks of life. What stands out to me is how trusted and well-regarded Cathy is, simply by the lengths at which her clients become friends, include her in their lives and trust her with their secrets and struggles. The book itself was a pageturner – I flew through it during my 2 hour flight because it was so readable. And I have to admit I love reading about something scandalous! Some stories, however, did feel unfinished, particularly in the cases where Cathy has lost track of the person or they’ve never come back through the salon again. There was a list of mental health resources, which is fantastic, but I think the book also would have benefitted from a list of sources or the use of end/footnotes, as in the last chapter there were a number of claims that should have been able to be substantiated by the reader if they chose to follow up. Unbosoming is everything it promises to be – a full disclosure of Cathy’s own thoughts and experiences and the tales and secrets she has picked up along her journey. It is full of passion and heart – congratulations Cathy on your first published work! Also thanks to Mum, who donated a photo of her physical copy!
