The Roots of a Musical Soul
For Emily Jane Pritchard, music has never been a distant dream or an elusive aspiration; it’s been an intrinsic part of her life from the very beginning. Growing up in a lively Irish family, gatherings were always marked by warmth, celebration, and, most notably, singing. Whether it was weddings, baptisms, or birthdays, the air was filled with passionate singalongs that brought everyone together. Long before she understood the words, Emily absorbed the lyrics of songs playing on Gold FM, immersing herself in their stories and emotions.
A Childhood Filled with Song and Reverence
One of her most vivid childhood memories is watching her mother sing at family weddings—an experience that sparked her lifelong admiration for the art of performance. Yet, life’s hardships soon cast their shadow. When financial struggles forced her parents to sell cherished belongings—including her mother’s microphone—Emily gained an early lesson in the fragility of dreams. She also remembers sitting beside her mother, recording songs off the radio and carefully rewinding cassette tapes to transcribe lyrics into a notebook—an act of patience and reverence that would later influence her approach to songwriting.
Teen Years and Musical Discovery
As a teenager, Emily picked up the guitar, finding a profound catharsis in pairing chords with melodies. Influenced by the raw energy of grunge and alternative music, she immersed herself in albums like Nirvana’s In Utero, The Pixies’ Doolittle, and The Cranberries’ Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? She also drew inspiration from fierce, melodic female-led acts such as Killing Heidi, No Doubt, and Avril Lavigne, whose vulnerability and edge resonated deeply within her.
Life’s Twists and Turns
Life’s journey took her through difficult relationships, travels, and periods of searching. Then, unexpectedly, she found herself back in Australia due to COVID-19 border closures—an upheaval that became a catalyst for transformation. During this time, Emily worked through The Artist’s Way, a creative recovery process that challenged her to take her artistry seriously. For the first time, she committed to stepping out of the shadows as a “shadow artist” and embracing her identity as a musician. Not long after, she discovered she was pregnant—a moment she describes as deeply significant. With a sense that her world was about to change, Emily felt an urgent need to create—to record and give shape to the songs she’d been carrying internally for years. She wanted to set an example for her child: that following a creative calling is possible, even amid uncertainty.
Writing as a Reflection of Self and Joy
Around this time, Emily wrote “Eleanor” for her niece—a heartfelt open letter to her younger self and anyone who has ever held back out of fear of judgment. The song became a reflection on the importance of expressing joy freely, without external voices diminishing it. Working through her creative process also helped her shed feelings of comparison and bitterness, replacing them with a newfound openness to mentorship and community.

Embracing Community and Recognition
This shift in mindset led her to share her work more openly entering songwriting competitions, seeking guidance from experienced artists, and embracing collaboration. Her efforts paid off when she won the Roddy Read Songwriting Award at the 2024 Maldon Folk Festival for her original song “Fish Out of Water.” She also had the privilege of performing “Eleanor” alongside ARIA Award-winning singer Katie Noonan at a special show at Cube 37.

Crafting Her Sound and Rising Performance
As her music journey gained momentum, Emily teamed up with producer James Seymour to craft her debut EP, recorded at Melrose Place Recording Studio in North Melbourne. The collection of four songs is rooted in honest melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and guitar-driven arrangements, shaped by Seymour’s subtle, attentive production. Her debut single, “Never Ending Holiday,” explores the contrast between external beauty and internal struggle—reaching #2 on the AMRAP Metro Charts—while her follow-up, “Sorry Sam,” earned praise from Triple J Unearthed’s Claire Mooney and led to supporting gigs with Brisbane band Alta Falls.
Live Performances and Building Momentum
Performing live became a natural extension of her creative growth. Emily appeared at events like International Women’s Day on the Mornington Peninsula, supported fellow artists at album launches, and played intimate showcases such as Simba Sessions. Her rising profile culminated in performances at the Maldon Folk Festival, the launch of her debut EP at The Wesley Anne, and an appearance at Music on the Hill.
Motherhood’s Clarity and the Power of Community
Motherhood brought new clarity and expanded her perspective. After welcoming her son into the world, Emily became acutely aware of the power of women’s stories and the importance of community. She realized she didn’t have to do everything alone—her “village” was essential not just for raising her child but for nurturing her creative life. Moving away from social media obsession and algorithm-driven success, she found a renewed love for community radio—a space where music feels alive again, shared among people who truly appreciate storytelling.
Intention, Balance, and Continuing Growth
Balancing motherhood and music require intention. As a solo, breastfeeding parent, Emily carefully chooses how to spend her time—focusing on meaningful connections, creative nourishment, and supporting others in her musical community. Her journey continues to be one of persistence, bravery, and unwavering openness. Her music, rich with authenticity and emotional depth, echoes her lived experiences—seamlessly shifting between vulnerability and strength, sweetness and rawness.
A Melody of Courage and Connection
Emily Jane Pritchard’s story reminds us that the most genuine melodies come from the heart—and that following your passion, despite life’s uncertainties, is the bravest thing we can do.
