Creator/Choreographer of Reclaim the Crone and founder of The Space Between Performance Collective, Gabrielle Leah New is an Occupational Therapist and Art Therapist, as well as an artist and performer and draws on her work as a therapist in all her art making - bringing the ideas of change, healing, and transformation to her practice.

She lives on the Mornington Peninsula and the development and debut of the Reclaim the Crone was supported by The Mornington Peninsula Performing Arts Fund.

The show had its debut season at the 2023 Mornington Peninsula Drift Festival and the Naarm/Melbourne premiere season will be launched in July 2024 supported by Theatre Works.

This is the fourth major production by The Space Between Performance Collective and their second show at Theatre Works.

I put my shoes on G&K by Leonie van Eyke

When she was turning 50, Gaby began researching how older women were portrayed in social media and discovered a plethora of information about the invisibility of older women inspiring her to develop Reclaim the Crone. The show was created as a response to seeking older female role models and aging powerfully. Developed over many years and conducting multiple interviews with older women from a variety of backgrounds and experiences to inform the work. The real voices and experiences are now included in the show as a part of the original sound score and projections.

All the performers in the show are over 55 years of age, with two over 60. The show spotlights older performers.

The group love to create immersive multi-arts experiences for their audiences and there is also an exhibition of collages created by Gabrielle that accompanies the performance.

Reclaim the Crone is a bold and haunting performance that marries contemporary Butoh dance theatre, projection, soundscape, poetry, and song. The use of Butoh in the production is a very deliberate inclusion as it is a movement artform that was initially created to represent the oppressed and marginalized…just like the Crone archetype.

All performers have a shared Butoh and Bodyweather practice. Helen Smith, Karen Berger and Gabrielle work together with another group called The Environmental Performance Agency who in September, will be developing a new work at Police Point in Portsea (look out for upcoming opportunities to get involved).

Reclaim the Crone is a multi-layered journey of defiance, growth and transformation offering new perspectives and possibilities for all people of all ages wrapped in a sonic and visually delicious, provocative treat.

The show unpacks a potential alternative to the current patriarchal domain. It is not male bashing but rather discusses a system that no longer works for any of us.

Aligning ‘The Crone’ with Mother Earth, the work also explores how the banishment of the Crone Archetype to the cultural shadow, displayed as the invisibility of older women is impacting nature, and our planet as a whole.

With an evocative original sound score by the world-renowned composer Norm Skipp woven seamlessly together with video and choreography by Gabrielle New and performed by a skilled, experienced and talented team, the show is not to be missed.

Composer Norm Skipp and Gabrielle Leah New have worked together for over 25 years. They began working in New Zealand and now with Norm based in the UK, all their collaboration happens using new technologies.

This an important show of our time when in many cultures older women have been denigrated to the shadows by patriarchal power influencing how we treat and engage with the wise old Mother Earth. The Crones bust out of convention and herald in a new age of eco-feminism being championed by older women.

Taping into the superpowers of the wise old woman who is connected and in touch with nature’s wisdom, it may feel a bit dangerous in the context of our current systems but what if Older Women were recognised for their strength, beauty and power. Could humanity move in a more positive and healing direction?

Lock in a date and join us on a mythic journey as the Crones fight for recognition within the Patriarchal domain, invoking the Goddesses of old through song, ritual and powerful dance. Mourning the losses of climate devastation and getting down to business cleaning up the metaphorical mess as they mend and weave a potential new

World where humanity reconnects with the mysterious old crone-Mother Earth.

The season is accompanied by some fabulous, not-to-be-missed free public programs after the shows; there will be a special ‘In-Conversation with supporter Deborah Hart from CLIMARTE on Friday the 19th of July and a rare opportunity for an in-person Q & A with Composer Norm Skipp on Wednesday the 24th of July.

There will be an audio described/captioned performance on Tuesday the 23rd of July at 2pm.
