Bongani Buckland, known in the electronic music scene simply as Bongani, was born into a world of rhythm and melody. His father, a talented percussionist, played alongside legendary artists such as Barry White, Donny Hathaway, and George Benson. From a young age, Bongani was surrounded by the rich sounds of African music, drumming, and the profound influence of his family’s musical ties, including connections to Lady Smith Black Mambazo.

Growing up in an Australian suburb with a predominantly Western musical landscape, Bongani was exposed to a wide array of genres, from rock and roll to 80s and 90s pop. However, his true musical awakening came in his early teens when hip hop began to dominate his listening habits. Influenced by the raw, powerful sounds of artists like Biggie, Method Man, Gangstarr and 50 Cent, Bongani immersed himself in the culture of 90s hip hop while staying updated with the evolving scene of the 2000s.

At the age of 18, Bongani's musical journey took a pivotal turn when a friend introduced him to electronic music. This new genre captivated him, leading him to the vibrant nightlife of Melbourne city nightclubs. Here, he discovered a deep love for the energy and diversity of electronic music.

Bongani's transition into DJing was a natural progression. Surrounded by friends in the industry, he began experimenting with turntables at house parties, honing his skills and developing his unique style. His talent quickly caught the attention of club owners, and by 2010, he became a resident DJ at Korova Milkbar, performing under the moniker Bongas. During his tenure, he hosted some of Australia's biggest dance music names, including Dom Dolla, Will Sparks, Torren Foote, and Joel Fletcher.

As Bongani's reputation as a DJ grew, so did his desire to create his own music. Initially, his production journey saw him crafting hip hop beats before transitioning into future bass, influenced by artists like DJ Premier & Flume. However, the challenge of aligning his production style with his DJ gigs led him to focus on a more techno-centric sound.

Bongani's first releases under the name BONGAS were a blend of minimal techno and techno. His breakthrough came when Recovery Collective, an up-and-coming Aussie label, took notice of his potential. In 2015, they invited him to submit his music, marking a significant milestone in his career. This partnership not only elevated his status within the Australian music scene but also opened doors to perform at major events, such as Rainbow Serpant, Esoteric, Subsonic, Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Babylon & Earthcore.

Joining Recovery Collective as a label manager and A&R, Bongani played a crucial role in shaping the label's sound and artist roster. His work allowed him to be involved with top-tier artists like Alex Stein, Enrico Sangiuliano, Victor Ruiz & Ann Clue. His dual role as a producer and label executive expanded his influence and provided him with invaluable industry experience.

While at Recovery Collective, Bongani's sound evolved from minimal techno to incorporate high-tech and melodic elements. Despite his success, the increasing demands of his personal life, including becoming a father, led him to re-evaluate his priorities. In a bid to stay true to his artistic vision, he decided to part ways with the label and focus solely on his own music.

Today, Bongani seamlessly blends high-tech minimal, melodic techno, and bush techno, creating a distinctive sound that resonates with audiences worldwide. His music has been featured on esteemed labels such as Sprout, Alula Tunes, Digital Structures, Alpaka, UGENIUS, Stone Seed and Techgnosis Records.

In addition to his production work, Bongani launched the Immersive Series, a mix series that showcases emerging producers and highlights his favourite records. This platform allows him to stay connected to the music scene while curating and sharing the sounds that inspire him.

Bongani's journey as an artist has been marked by profound moments of transformation and continuous growth. Balancing his professional achievements with personal milestones, he remains dedicated to his craft, driven by a passion for music that transcends trends and genres. As he continues to evolve, Bongani stays committed to the journey, knowing that his love for music will guide him through every twist and turn, both on and off the stage.
