The journey began in 2007 when a group of mates were having lunch together discussing women’s health. At the time there was an increased awareness in communities around the prevalence of breast cancer, the importance of regular breast checks and lots of fundraising to fund for improved health care in this area. Whilst continuing to discuss, it became apparent amongst them that there was very little talk, promotion, and fundraising around men’s health.

It was at this point that a small number of these men united to further explore the possibility of promoting men’s health. Their belief was that men do not look after their health and get regularly checked. As this group of mates were getting to their forties, when checking for prostate cancer is essential in detection and early prevention, they believed they needed to do something to spark awareness. This is when they created a group named the Charity Boys and announced plans to fundraise for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia with the intention of gaining awareness amongst men about men’s health and prostate care.

This was the beginning of a 16-year journey of fundraising, promotion, and conversations. From then on, each month, the Charity Boys host a men’s luncheon. They sourced a small community hall in Brunswick where the Charity Boys cook a lunch which comprises of homemade food such as pasta dishes, charcuterie platters, meats, salads and a little sweet with espresso coffee.

Each month approximately 50 men join in with the luncheon, including raffles and drinks. All profits go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. It is a great way to gather a group of men, to eat, talk and give to such a great cause.

As well as this, every November, since 2007 an annual Gala Dinner Dance is held. The most recent of these nights gathered a total of 420 people. It is such an eventful night with a fun vibe. There are raffles, prizes, music, dance, food, and drinks. The Charity Boys source sponsors who contribute funds to the profits. It has been amazing to see the generosity over the years. So far, just over $550,000 have been fundraised for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. These funds have helped to support vital research and the nursing program in supporting the recovering of impacted patients.

In promoting the awareness to men about getting regularly checked, one of the main messages has been

“Be aware, be informed and get regularly checked”

Over the years guest speakers have also contributed to starting conversations including well known men who have been impacted by this disease as well as members of Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Their relationship with the PCFA has been consistent and strong. They have supported and greatly appreciated the work of the Charity Boys.

The Charity Boys committee today is directed by Aldo Angelucci and Laurie Vescio.

Honourably, in 2021 the Charity Boys were recognised by Linda Dessau, Governor of Victoria for their charity efforts. They were invited to attend Government House in recognition for their 15-year association with fundraising for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

This year marks the 17th year association with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia with the Charity Boys being the longest serving. They continue to work hard to support this charity, spread the word to men, and continue the conversation about men’s health.
