Most of the time Mati is a happy go lucky person. Suddenly, everything changed.

Did Mati deserve the courtesy of being notified of any change that was taking place to her working conditions/shifts, prior to any adjustments being made? Yes

Did Mati’s employer provide notification or schedule a meeting to inform her about any changes that were going to be made? No

Mati is a former employee of a company that she worked at for more than 10 years and always enjoyed going to work. She never encountered workplace issues until one day, without warning, an unexpected turn of events changed everything.

Feeling deflated, disrespected, and unable to think clearly, Mati immediately reached out to her (GP) General Practitioner for support.

Mati’s breathing started to become problematic causing health issues that she had never experienced before, and her train of thought became distorted and confused.

Within a short period of time Mati was emotionally exhausted. She was unable to sleep and became depressed. This impacted the way Mati felt about herself, and her life.

The whirlwind of negative events that Mati was subjected to were unwarranted. She did not deserve to be treated unfairly. Matti felt downhearted. The workplace changes also impacted Mati financially. Dealing with added pressures escalated her stress levels and she became so depressed that she hibernated at home and did not get out of bed for days. For the first time in her life, she was diagnosed with anxiety disorder and was prescribed medication to help manage her symptoms.

Thankfully with the support Matti received from family, friends, and the appropriate networks, she was able to get the help she needed. It took patience and time to decide to go through withstanding her ground and challenging the workplace issue she was facing, but thankfully Mati made the right choice to pursue the matter.

It’s a relief to know that Matti is now in a better head space, feeling good about herself. Finding her way in life without the stress that was undeservingly imposed upon her allowed Mati to reassess her career options. She is now in the process of learning new skills and is looking forward to a new beginning.

Just like Mati, you are worthy of being happy and respected in your workplace. Be proud of yourself, have a voice and know that you have rights. Don’t settle for anything less than what you deserve.

You are full of value – don’t ever forget it!

Reducing workplace harm. Improving outcomes for injured workers

You may give lots of love, be a very kind person, have exceptional skills and work ethic, be a great “team player” have a positive attitude, be proficient in whatever you do, but somehow and somewhere around the line these characteristics seem to be ignored by others.

At times you may feel discouraged, as if your positive traits are valueless. Does this make you less of a person? No.

You must remember that there are people who have no clue as to how to measure value. Do not think that whatever you do is not enough. Somewhere in that glimmer of light, you are helping someone or something for the better. Measure your own worth and keep building your confidence.

If you’re experiencing workplace issues that are making you feel unsafe, uncomfortable, unhappy, or stressed, talk to someone. Communication is key!

Get the support available to you from family, friends, or a professional representative from Fair work, WorkSafe.
