Monday 14th July 2025 1pm https://rppfm.com.au

Carolina, affectionately known as Carol or Lina, was born in Italy in 1945. Her early childhood was marked by change and resilience. In 1951, at just six years old, she embarked on a new chapter when her family immigrated to Australia. Alongside her mother Lucia, her elder brother Sam, and her younger sisters Angela and Grace, Carolina left behind her homeland in search of a brighter future. Her father Lorenzo had already moved ahead in 1949, settling in Gippsland, Victoria where the family was reunited after three years of separation.

Growing up in Gippsland, Carolina quickly learned the importance of responsibility. In 1952 her youngest brother Frank was born completing their family of 5 children.  As a young girl, she often helped her mother care for her siblings, standing on a small stool to wash dishes, prepare meals, and iron clothes. Life was simple but demanding, especially as she grappled with learning English and adjusting to a new culture. Despite these challenges, she became fluent and even helped others in her family understand the language, becoming a vital part of her household.

The family’s days were filled with hard work and family traditions. On weekends, they would head out into the fields, helping pick fresh crops like beans and peas—snacking on the produce as they worked. These outings, often in the back of a farmer’s Ute, became treasured rituals. For entertainment, Carolina and her siblings went to the local theatre for matinee movies, bringing homemade popcorn and hoping for a treat like ice cream. One of her favourite tv series was Zorro, a timeless adventure that sparked her imagination. She also loved watching Doris Day movies.

At just 14 years old, Carolina stepped into the workforce, starting her first job at the local supermarket deli. Her hard work, dedication, and natural talent quickly earned her a leadership role, showcasing her early potential and strong character. In 1963, seeking new horizons and fresh opportunities, her family made the move to Melbourne’s Coburg. Undeterred, Carolina continued her employment in delis, gaining valuable skills and experience. Two years later, in 1965, she began working at Fletcher Jones, where she discovered a passion for sewing. As a talented seamstress, she specialized in crafting high-quality menswear, demonstrating her meticulous attention to detail and love for her craft. Sewing became more than a job for Carolina; it was a source of pride and personal fulfillment, as she enjoyed creating garments with precision, care, and a dedication to excellence. Her journey reflects resilience, skill, and a commitment to growth, laying the foundation for her future achievements and the loving family she would build.

It was during this chapter of her life, she met Frank, a young man who often waited for her outside her workplace. Their connection deepened over time, leading them to marry in 1966. United by love they dedicated themselves to building a life together and worked tirelessly eventually purchasing their own home in Coburg. Throughout these years, Carolina balanced her responsibilities as a working mother, demonstrating unwavering devotion, resilience, and determination. Her greatest source of pride is her family. Her beloved children, Laurie, Cathy and Luci were all born in Coburg and with the help of her mum otherwise known as Nonna Lucia, and neighbour nanna Delaney, Carolina was able to continue part time work.

In 1975, with new beginnings on the horizon, Carolina and her family moved to Craigieburn—a growing community where she quickly became a respected and cherished member. In 1980, the arrival of her fourth child, baby Michelle, marked a joyful milestone and completed her loving family. Over time she made lifelong friends, sharing her Italian heritage—teaching friends how to make pasta sauces and continental sausages—while embracing Australian customs like bonfire nights and meat pies. Her involvement extended beyond her home; she was actively engaged in local sports, supporting her children in tennis, Little Athletics, netball, basketball, and cricket, always fostering a sense of community.

Life, however, was not without trials. In 1989, Carolina faced a serious health challenge when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She underwent radiotherapy and fought bravely, emerging victorious. Yet, her health journey continued. In 2008, she was diagnosed with lymphoedema, a condition requiring ongoing care. Demonstrating her resilience, Carolina committed herself to her health, joining a local hydrotherapy group. She became a volunteer group leader, leading exercises and inspiring others. Carolina continues her morning routine two or three times a week. You can find her at the pool, exercising and catching up with friends over morning tea and treats. These moments of socialization and self-care are a testament to her positive outlook and unwavering spirit. Carolina’s journey through illness has demonstrated her ability to face adversity with courage, grace, and an enduring hope for the future. Her story continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience, community, and the love that sustains her through life’s challenges.

She often reflects on her life's journey with a sense of pride and appreciation, grateful for her parents’ courageous leap of faith that set her on her path. Her children and grandchildren’s successes bring her immense joy, and she treasures the bonds of family and friendship that have enriched her life. Carolina’s outlook remains optimistic, and she continues to inspire those around her with her warmth and unwavering love for her family and community.
