Icky Sitch is a fresh new name on the Melbourne music scene. Comprising Bon Short on drums, Finn Swayn on bass and vocals, Dylan Walker on keyboard and vocals, and Jimmy Nougher on guitar. This quartet from the Mornington Peninsula has quietly earned a reputation as one of the area's most versatile and entertaining acts.
The journey of Icky Sitch begins in 2017 when high school friends Finn and Bon decided to transform their weekend jam sessions into something more substantial in the form of a band called The Stokers. A year later, the duo expanded with the addition of guitarist Jimmy, then in 2020, post-high school graduation, keyboardist, and vocalist Dylan joined the ranks, prompting the band's rebranding from The Stokers to the distinctive moniker Icky Sitch. The name came about from a conversation at a party where someone described themselves as being in “a really icky situation”, also reflecting the band's down-to-earth approach to their craft.
Known for their high-energy live performances, Icky Sitch has become synonymous with delivering a musical experience that can make even the most reserved audiences tap their feet. The chemistry among the band members is tangible, each contributing their unique flair to the mix – Finn's driving basslines, Jimmy's soaring guitar work, Dylan's keyboard mastery, and Bon's powerhouse drumming. This cohesion isn't just a product of shared musical influences but is rooted in genuine camaraderie, reflecting their organic evolution from teenage friends to musical collaborators.
In August 2023, Icky Sitch unveiled their debut album, "Mrs Daisy’s Sweet and Savoury," a project that had been brewing since May 2022. Far from being just another addition to the indie guitar pop scene, the album resonates joyous and eclectic sounds with a Huxton Creepers/Sunnyboys indie guitar pop vibe. It's a testament not only to their musical prowess but to the sheer passion and dedication that fuelled its creation.
Finn and Dylan took on the responsibility of crafting the album's narrative, exploring themes that span the spectrum of human experience – from the complexities of growing up to the intricacies of relationships and the nuances of personal struggles. The resulting body of work is a well-crafted sonic journey that resonates with anyone who has ever grappled with love, loss, or simply the ups and downs of life, a shared expression of the human condition, wrapped in heartfelt lyrics and underscored by the band's raw energy.
The recording process unfolded over several months at Capel Sound Studios on the Mornington Peninsula, with Dave Walker and Dan Swan at the helm. This creative space allowed Icky Sitch to push their boundaries and experiment with different sounds. The collaboration with horn player Jack Howard from Hunters and Collectors and violinist Greg Hunt on select tracks added layers of depth, elevating the album beyond expectations.
"Mrs Daisy’s Sweet and Savoury" is a testament to Icky Sitch's commitment to preserving the essence of classic rock and roll while infusing their own brand of soulful storytelling and musical innovation. Finn and Dylan's vocals dance seamlessly over Bon's infectious drum grooves and Jimmy's incendiary guitar work, creating a dynamic sonic tapestry that transcends generational boundaries.
In the bustling and competitive Melbourne music scene, Icky Sitch distinguishes itself not only through its musical offerings but through the authenticity and creativity embedded in its DNA. The band's journey, from carefree jam sessions among friends to a recognized force with a reputation for energetic live performances across the Peninsula, is a testament to their genuine love and appreciation for music in all its forms.
Whether you find yourself drawn to their live shows or lose yourself in the resonant notes of their album, Icky Sitch is a band that refuses to conform, choosing instead to be a true reflection of the unbridled joy and raw authenticity that is the heart of rock and roll.
